ISO 19650 Series Updates
Since Parts 1 and 2 were first published in 2018, the way we produce, share and use information about built assets has evolved. The updates to Parts 1, 2 and 3 reflect a broader focus on information management across the whole life of an asset, from early planning and design through construction, operation and maintenance.
BIM remains important. 'BIM models' help people create and use information, but they are only part of the picture. Asset information also includes the documents, records, geospatial information (like maps, surveys, GIS) and other tabulated data needed to make decisions, manage change and keep an asset working well.
'Model' can mean more than one thing. The revised standards aim to make this wider approach clearer and easier to apply. Producing, managing and maintaining information containers > information models > an Asset Information Model (AIM) is a clearer focus. Lean more with us!
CHANGING STANDARDS, CHANGING Terminology

Reference only — always check current appointment and contract wording for the specific terms that apply to your project.
Status: ISO/DIS 19650-1:2026, ISO/DIS 19650-2:2026 and ISO/DIS 19650-3:2026 are draft international standards. The final published text may still change, but the direction of travel is now clear enough to start preparing — reviewing your EIR, BEP, MIDP, TIDP, CDE guidance, appointment wording and training materials ahead of formal publication.

What's Changing
The proposed update marks a shift from a BIM-centred explanation of ISO 19650 to a broader whole-life information management approach. Expect updated terminology, more emphasis on information purposes, and the Common Data Environment reframed as an operational framework supported by enabling technologies rather than a single piece of software.
Part 2 is being drawn closer to Part 3, bringing project delivery and operational information management into a single whole-life process rather than two separate phases handed over at completion.
Part 3 is being repositioned as practical implementation guidance for applying the whole-life information management process in operation — aligning much more closely with how Part 2 is applied on projects.
Why It Matters
Asset owners and operators, appointing parties and clients, BIM and information managers, digital construction teams, estates and FM teams, and any consultant or contractor whose contracts, templates or training reference ISO 19650 or its predecessor BS/PAS 1192 documents.
